Artist Statement

My photography exposes sociocultural issues within the context of local communities. Supported through the 2000 McKnight Foundation for Photographers Fellowship, Bars are large color photographs depicting the interiors of nightclubs within the Twin Cites and throughout the United States. The space, rich in detail, is culled from a 4x5 negative, accentuating the objects within the frame. Social class is made visible through cultural codes and norms held by society. Memory and experience help shape our thoughts - no bodies are visualized in the Bar series. The images depict meeting places devoid of the people who congregate there.
