Abstract Expressionistic Painter
Catherine Reid Day is an award winning painter and poet, a singer and television producer. She discovered painting in the 1990s after a friend told her that she needed to connect to her creative self or she would die. Her first painting instructor, Sally Brown, offered her the freedom and permission to discover her own unique creative voice as a painter. This led Catherine to rediscovery of her many paths to the creative life: as a painter but also as a gardener, television producer writer, and singer. In addition to serving as first a protégé (in 1994-96) and then as a Mentor, Catherine has taught multiple years in MAX Arts Alive class “The Geography of the Imagination,” through the Perpich Center for the Arts and the Anderson Center. She has also taught through the University of Minnesota’s Complete Scholars Program and at United Theological Seminary in their Summer Institute. She is active in two art groups, including an interdisciplinary group called X-Pollinate that uses the critical response discipline invented by choreographer Liz Lehrman. She has shown her work locally and regionally and is currently preparing for a show at Abbott Northwestern Hospitals in the Center for Wholeness and Healing. She works for the Minnesota Children’s Museum where she is VP for External Relations and continues to serve as Executive Producer of the public television series Mental Engineering, the only show about television commercials and our commercial culture. She is the mother of a 9 year old daughter who brings her joy every day.
